1. Young designers, street artists, graffiti artists and creatives from all over the world are designing exclusives for armedangels print designs.

2. We produce, market and sell our collections on our own at armedangels.

3. The clothes are made within FAIRTRADE terms, that means:

- we only use organic cotton, and therefore, pesticide-free cotton wool
- the farmers who grow the cotton are paid fair prices
- fair production conditions are guaranteed: no child-labour, fair wages, well-regulated working conditions

4. We donate 1€ from every shirt sold to aid projects in developing countries

5. And, on top it all off everyone can apply to become a designer. Not only are you doing something for a good cause, but you also have the chance to earn some money.

What’s behind the armedangels® name?

To understand our name, you only have to have a look at our logo. We’re bringing Robin Hood into the present and giving him a full make-over. Our golden angel is the ambassador for an alternative to the prevalent abuses with the fashion industry, such as environmental pollution, child labour and wage exploitation. By wearing our shirts you too can be part of this movement and of the armedangels community.

What exactly are the abuses with the fashion industry?

Let’s describe a typical working day for a young unskilled labourer somewhere in Asia, who makes clothes for a famous and well-loved fashion enterprise. At just 15 years old she is forced to work seven days a weeks and up to 20 hours a day. She sleeps with her colleagues under a sewing machine on the factory floor, while the next shift continues to work the machines. The production of each T-shirt is split into several processes. For each T-shirt, she has only thirty seconds to do her part of the work. She knows she can anticipate abuse and humiliation if she does not achieve her quota. She has to stand up all day long, is forbidden to speak to her colleagues and must get permission to go to the toilet. Her wages for a seven day week is the same as what we spend on one latte macchiato in this country – and she has to feed her whole family on this.

This is no exaggeration. What we describe are normal conditions in textile-producing countries such as China, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Pakistan and Indonesia. The biggest business concerns, sports goods manufacturers, and even designer labels from the USA and Europe produce almost everything under these conditions in so-called sweatshops in the poorest countries in the world.

And we haven’t even got round to talking about environmental pollution: cotton fields are blasted with pesticides in such a way that the ground water in the surrounding areas is contaminated and unusable. It’s so bad that the villages, which border these cotton-growing regions have to transport their water from further away. Right now, only 1% of the cotton that is farmed is pesticide-free or ‘organic cotton’.

Do you think that there is nothing anyone can do against these abuses since Eco-fashion is pretty unwearable?

We thought so too. That’s why we took matters into our own hands and founded armedangels, the world’s first social fashion label. We make superior street wear for trendsetters with a social conscience. As pioneers of this scene, we are offering a real alternative: finest quality and casual cuts achieved through a complete rejection of industry misdeeds. You can finally wear fashion that looks good and know that others did not have to suffer.

What is Fairtrade?

FAIRTRADE is a stamp of quality from the Fairtrade Foundation. The Fairtrade Foundation is not a brand, but rather a seal given to products. These products must conform to the highest standards in raw materials, and production/manufacturing conditions. TransFair also offers the poorest of poor people in India, Peru, Mali and Senegal the opportunity to sell their harvests (e.g. cotton) independently from world market prices, thus enabling them to have fair and constant trade. Through pesticide free crop growing, they ensure that the ecological balance is not destroyed for the future.
